Giant parathyroid cyst – a rare cause of severe hypercalcaemia

Rehman Shoib Ur , Pazderska Agnieszka , Van Tornout F. , Pain Simon , Francis Jonathan , Gunda Rohini , Ahluwalia Rupa

Parathyroid cysts (PCs) are rare lesions usually found during exploration of neck and mediastinal masses. Ten percent of PCs can be functional and release parathyroid hormones causing hypercalcemia. Most PCs are small but lesions greater than 1 cm can exert pressure effects on adjacent structures\. Diagnosis can be challenging as PCs can mimic thyroid masses with no focal tracer uptake during most functional imaging modalities. Fine needle aspiration (FNA) can help if coupled ...

A Single Nucleotide Polymorphism in the BACH2 Gene Contributes to Susceptibility to Autoimmune Addison’s Disease in UK and Norwegian cohorts

Pazderska Agnieszka , Oftedal Bergithe , Napier Catherine , Ainsworth Holly , Husebye Eystein , Cordell Heather , Pearce Simon , Mitchell Anna

Background: Autoimmune Addison disease (AAD) is a rare but highly heritable endocrinopathy. The BACH2 protein plays a crucial role in T lymphocyte maturation, and in particular in regulatory T cell formation, and allelic variation in its gene has been associated with autoimmune conditions such as type 1 diabetes, autoimmune thyroid disease and vitiligo. Its role in susceptibility to autoimmune Addison’s disease (AAD) has not been investigated.Aim: T...

Introduction: The aim of our study was to assess the morning and evening cortisol plasma levels in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).Material and method: 95 patients gave their informed consent to participate in the study and were divided into two groups. Orbitopathy as a manifestation of Immunoglobulin-G4-related disease – case report

Zwolak Agnieszka , Dudzinska Marta , Swirska Joanna , Malicka Joanna , Daniluk Jadwiga , Tarach Jerzy S

Introduction: Immunoglobulin-G4-related disease (IgG4RD) is a multidisciplinary problem due to plasmatic cells infiltration and areas of fibrosis in the affected tissues. In IgG4RD, elevation of serum IgG4 immunoglobulins is present. Clinically, the disease is mainly manifested as: autoimmune pancreatitis, salivary gland involvement, sclerosing cholangitis, lymphadenopathy, lachrymal gland enlargement, retroperitoneal fibrosis or orbital pseudotumor. The simultaneous involveme...

Baseline and metoclopramide induced plasma prolactin level in lean PCOS women according to their FAI phenotype

Mrozinska Sandra , Gorztyla Katarzyna , Przywara Agnieszka , Guzik Justyna , Kialka Marta , Milewicz Tomasz

Aim: Aim of our study was to compare: the baseline and metoclopramide induced prolactin plasma level between PCOS women with FAI <5 phenotype (group A)(FAI, total testosterone divided by sex hormone biding globulin, whole multiply by 100) and PCOS women with FAI>5 phenotype (group B).Patients and methods: The study population consisted of 354 lean women with PCOS. In all the patients the prolactin level at 02:00 h, 08:00 h and during the metoclop...

The prevalence of metabolic syndrome in adult patients with long-standing hypopituitarism who receive adequate supplemental therapy

Zwolak Agnieszka , Swirska Joanna , Dudzinska Marta , Kurowska Maria , Daniluk Jadwiga , Tarach Jerzy S

Introduction: Hypopituitarism is characterized by the absence of pituitary hormones. Depending on what pituitary hormones are missing and what is the etiology of hypopituitarism, its clinical manifestation varies. Apart from evident symptoms and signs of hypopituitarism due to hormonal insufficiencies, several studies reveal that long-standing hypopituitarism, including particularly absence of GH, is related to higher risk of metabolic syndrome.Objective...

Exophthalmos as the first manifestation of mantle cell lymphoma of the patient with Hashimoto thyroiditis

Marczewski Krzysztof , Boniek-Poprawa Dorota , Tomaszewski Piotr , Kawałko Agnieszka , Maciejewski Marek

Introduction: The diagnosis of thyroid orbitopathy is based on clinical symptoms and typical changes in laboratory tests confirming thyroid disease. In approximately 5% it is Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Typical treatment is primarily steroids administered intravenously. But one disease does not exempts the other, and the drugs can not read. Therefore, we would like to present the history of our patient.Case report: 55 year-old man was admitted to the E...

Outcomes following radioactive iodine therapy (RAI) in hyperthyroid patients with Grave’s disease and toxic nodular disease

Aljenaee Khaled , McDonnell Tara , Cooke Jennie , Phelan Niamh , Pazderska Agnieszka , Healy Marie-Louise

Background: RAI is used as definitive treatment for hyperthyroidism, but administered activities vary between institutions. We used a fixed activity of RAI therapy for Grave’s disease (GD) and toxic multinodular goitre (TMNG), and calculated activity for toxic adenoma (TA). We reviewed treatment outcomes at one year. Methods: Thyroid function tests 1 year post RAI were reviewed retrospectively to asess outcome for 79 hyperthyroid patients divided int...

The use of a thyroid telephone clinic (TTC) to follow up thyroid function tests (TFTs) in patients treated with radio-iodine (RAI) for thyrotoxicosis

Aljenaee Khaled , Mcdonnell Tara , Phelan Niamh , Pazderska Agnieszka , Healy Marie-Lousie

The thyroid telephone clinic (TTC) was established to facilitate rapid decision making on timing of introducion of anti-thyroidals or L-thyroxine replacement therapy post RAI so avoiding unnecessary outpatient appointments or leaving patients with untreated hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism. The TTC is also used to monitor TFTs during pregnancy and to dose-titrate treatment of unstable hypo- or hyperthyroid patients. This service is provided to patients who speak English fluen...
